Prayer of St John of Damascus (before sleep)
O Master, Lover of mankind, will this couch be my coffin, or wilt Thou yet enlighten my wretched soul with a new day? Behold, the coffin lieth before me; behold, death confronteth me. I fear, O Lord, Thy Judgement, and the endless torments, yet I cease not to do evil. I anger Thee, my Lord God, and Thy most pure Mother, and all the heavenly hosts, and my holy guardian angel.
I know, O Lord, that I am unworthy of Thy lovingkindness; meet for every condemnation and torment am I. But, O Lord, whether I will or not, save me. For to save a good man is no great thing, and to have mercy on the pure is nothing wonderful, for they are worthy of Thy mercy. Show, then, the wonder of Thy mercy upon me, a sinner. In this make manifest Thy love for mankind, lest my wickedness prevail over Thy ineffable goodness and lovingkindness. And as Thou wilt, order my life. Amen.
